This study explores opportunities and challenges of integrating English as a Medium of Instruction (EMI) and Virtual Exchange (VE) within a semester-long course at Fatec State College, São Paulo, Brazil, in collaboration with UEK Krakow, Poland. Focusing on EMI – content delivery in English using authentic materials like Business Process Management (BPM) tools, case studies, and customer feedback analysis – it examined to what extent this approach can promote non-native English-speaking students’ language development comprehension, and engagement, including gains in business vocabulary, listening skills, and professional confidence. Concurrently, the VE component, involving virtual mural telecollaboration for case analysis and cultural sharing, examined how it can foster intercultural communication and collaborative skills amid cross-cultural management contexts. Data collected through post-course reflective student feedback questionnaires from participants was analysed thematically, revealing nuanced patterns in language proficiency, global competence, and content application. The findings highlighted notable benefits of EMI-VE integration such as improved proficiency via non-punitive grading focused on concepts rather than language; enhanced global competence through exposure to diverse management styles and soft skills; and practical application of management concepts in real scenarios. However, it also highlighted significant hurdles such as barriers with technical vocabulary, varying proficiency levels, limited group participation, time zone differences, and technical issues, which affected content comprehension and intercultural engagement. The research contributes to best practices for the combination of EMI and VE by offering targeted, scalable recommendations for educators and institutions aiming to design inclusive internationalized learning environments and to leverage transformative learning in higher education curricula.
