Objective: To evaluate the clinical efficacy of warm needling moxibustion (WNM) combined with acupoint massage within a continuation care model on joint function recovery and fall risk reduction in elderly patients with knee osteoarthritis (KOA).
Methods: A total of 120 elderly patients diagnosed with KOA were randomly allocated into a control group (n = 60) receiving conventional rehabilitation nursing and an intervention group (n = 60) receiving WNM combined with acupoint massage under a structured continuation care framework. Both groups were followed for 12 weeks. Outcome measures included the Western Ontario and McMaster Universities Osteoarthritis Index (WOMAC), Visual Analogue Scale (VAS) for pain intensity, Range of Motion (ROM) of the knee joint, the Timed Up and Go Test (TUGT) for fall risk assessment, and the Berg Balance Scale (BBS).
Results: Compared with the control group, the intervention group demonstrated significantly greater improvements in WOMAC scores, VAS scores, and knee ROM at weeks 6 and 12 (P < 0.01). TUGT completion time was markedly reduced and BBS scores significantly elevated in the intervention group (P < 0.01). Conclusion: The integrated continuation care model incorporating WNM and acupoint massage effectively alleviates pain, enhances knee joint function, improves balance performance, and reduces fall risk in elderly KOA patients, warranting broader clinical application.
