This study reports on pre-service teachers’ challenges which impedes their pedagogical content knowledge (PCK) development during teaching practice (TPRAC). In the South African context, it is mandatory that pre-service teachers complete a certain amount of time at schools acquiring practical and real-world experience to be certified qualified professionals. This means providing opportunities to gain real-world experience on what to teach and how to teach. Kolb (1984) experiential learning theory guided the conceptual framework of how the pre-service teachers apply the principles of experiential learning to build a steady PCK development foundation in a real teaching and learning environment. However, their journey is not always a smooth ride. They come across several challenges which derail these developments to a point of stagnancy. This qualitative study employed exploratory case study approach. Twenty final year pre-service (n=20) who were assessed in one district which compose of well-resourced and under resourced schools were purposively sampled. Data were generated through semi-structured interviews. Data were thematically analyzed using ATLAS.ti version 8.0. Preliminary results indicated contextual and systemic challenges as impediments for pre-service teachers’ professional growth and development during the teaching practice. This study recommends a collaborative effort between the university and school management train mentor teachers to ensure pre-service teachers’ holistic development.
