Responding to the growing influence of AI in higher education, the question driving this project is: “How can universities best prepare students in all fields of study for jobs of the future by incorporating AI skills and literacies in general education requirements?” Given the rapid rate of change, there is a growing body of literature informing this line of inquiry using many different methodological approaches (e.g. George & Sevak, 2026; Hun, Sarun, & Sophary, 2026; Dai, Liu, & Zhang, 2026, Chiu, 2025; Caspari-Sadeghi, 2026; Deng & Sun, 2026; Wiese, Hoefer, & Altenburger, 2025; Giannakos et al. 2025; Kasneci et al., 2023; Patrissia, forthcoming; Moles & Robinson, forthcoming). For instance, scholars suggest customizing and personalizing student learning experiences as a possible ethical approach. The literature also notes challenges, especially given the rise of generative AI, such as maintaining academic integrity, meaningfully assessing student work, and the need to cultivate both applied AI skills and critical AI literacy relevant to professional contexts. This presentation proposes innovative and ethically grounded pedagogies to support meaningful student learning and workforce preparedness. It engages with and builds on AI education scholarship, including recent developments in instructional design strategies, frameworks, and principles. Significantly, I will draw on multi-disciplinary and multi-method contributions from a variety of authors, using different methods in my forthcoming edited book in press with ESMC. By highlighting and citing their practical pedagogical strategies for integrating AI tools alongside structured critical engagement with those tools, I will offer pedagogical tools adaptable for educators across disciplines.
