The Importance of Implementing AI Institutional Policy in Higher Education (109051)
Session: On Demand
Room: Virtual Video Presentation
Presentation Type:Virtual Presentation
A significant increase in Artificial Intelligence (AI) technologies in educational practices has raised a number of ethical issues related to academic integrity, data privacy, and transparency. In response to these challenges, international higher education institutions have recognized the necessity to implement ethical AI policies to regulate the use of AI in academic processes. Some international universities that appeared at the forefront of this educational innovation have necessitated the formalization of AI policies at their institutions. Other universities, however, have not yet developed their institutional policies, posing threats to academic integrity and transparent practices. The aim of the study is to explore the importance of institutional AI policy to ensure the ethical and transparent use of AI in higher education. The research employed a quantitative methodology and surveyed 50 university lecturers across higher education institutions in Georgia. The purpose of the survey was to investigate the presence of AI regulations at Georgian universities, the participants’ AI practices and their attitudes towards the implementation of formal AI policies. The findings indicate that while AI is widely used in teaching preparation, research, content generation, and administrative work, many users remain uncertain about acceptable practices. Moreover, the majority of the participants are unaware whether their universities have an AI governing policy, causing confusion among the university community. The participants also emphasized the urgency of integrating AI governance into academic integrity frameworks and highlighted the demand to define AI use in teaching, learning, and research practices.
