Despite the availability of AI tools for writing, learning Chinese characters, grammar, and writing remains essential for students. It provides a foundational understanding of the language’s structure, fostering creativity and allowing for unique self-expression, which are valuable for students' academic achievement and career success, which AI might not fully capture. Self-paced learning is a crucial approach for fostering intrinsic motivation in students, especially in Chinese language learning, which requires extended practice to achieve proficiency. This paper attempts to present the detailed structure and design of an online self-learning courseware, ‘Game-based Chinese Communication for the Workplace’, in the hope that it may provide useful perspectives for international educational academia interested in game-based self-learning resources. Developed with a game-like interface, the courseware features level-based challenges, instant feedback, and reward mechanisms to enhance student motivation and engagement. Set within a diverse company, students (players) assume the role of new employees tasked with solving work-related challenges assigned by superiors and colleagues, all centered on Chinese language application. The question bank comprises five categories, corresponding to five levels, each simulating a different company department through mini-games. The courseware is being developed using Unity as the game development engine, allowing for a dynamic and interactive learning experience. It will be seamlessly integrated into the university’s official online learning platform. Expected to launch in September 2026, the courseware will be accessible to all University of Hong Kong students via their student credentials as a voluntary online self-learning resource.
