Preventing frailty and enhancing independence among older people benefits society, individuals, and the economy by reducing the burden of care. This presentation outlines a 5-year government-funded research programme that adopts a preventative approach to frailty, targeting social and environmental precursors before care becomes necessary. Unlike current interventions focusing on already frail individuals, this research identifies early intervention opportunities through twenty years of longitudinal data from the New Zealand Health, Work and Retirement (HWR) Study. The programme leverages New Zealand's world leading population-based data repository (Integrated Data Infrastructure; IDI), linking HWR data (including lifecourse histories and physical and cognitive assessments) with national health and disability datasets. Advanced computational methods map trajectories of wellbeing and independence, identifying specific policy targets for early intervention. This research programme will produce evidence-based recommendations and visual representations demonstrating key intervention areas to enhance independence and reduce care burdens.
