The Modern Language Association's 2021 report on language enrollment in US colleges and universities shows a decline in Chinese language enrollment in recent years. However, enrollment in heritage Chinese language courses at a private University in the Southeastern U.S. has continued to grow. This study, based on a survey of 125 heritage speakers of Chinese conducted during the 2023-2025 academic years, has identified factors that have driven this rise and those that deterred students from enrolling in these courses. The findings reveal that a significant motivator for enrolling in Chinese courses is the desire to connect with older generations, Chinese communities and to explore cultural roots through language. Conversely, the shifting dynamics and political and economic tensions between China and the U.S. appear to have minimal impact on students' enrollment decisions. Furthermore, logistical challenges, particularly balancing language courses with other course requirements for their majors, are more influential in students' decisions. These findings have the potential to provide valuable insights for curricular and pedagogical adjustments and better support students in their language learning journey. This presentation will introduce the research design, methodology, and its main findings. Additionally, the presenter will share initial reflections on how to improve the curriculum for heritage language courses and promote learners’ cultural and linguistic competencies.
